Our Mission
The Swanton Public Library provides a friendly and engaging atmosphere while maintaining a diverse and useful collection necessary to meet the informational and cultural needs of the community.
Our History
In 1898, a group of far-sighted women, The Golden Rule Circle of the King’s Daughters, built the library as a gift to the people of Swanton. Beginning with just three books in a reading room on Merchant’s Row, the collection soon outgrew the room and the King’s Daughters decided to put aside one tenth of their earnings toward building a library. These efforts, along with fundraisers and generous gifts from members of the community, became a vision finally realized on June 22, 1915, when the cornerstone of the Swanton Public Library was laid.
In February 1916, the library began serving the community from its present location in the heart of Swanton Village. The vision of “a center in which youth may find instruction and adults information and recreation” so long held by the King’s Daughters, continues today in our library, a remarkable gift to the people of Swanton.
